Ducks nab linebacker from Bears, must hibernate one year

On the same night the Ducks picked up a coveted high school linebacker in Jimmie Swain, they added 6-3, 225 Johnny Ragin, formerly of Wilsonville High School, who is transferring this term after playing one season with the Cal Bears.

Justin Hopkins of 247 Sports first reported the transfer. Ragin will sit out the 2014 as a redshirt and have three years eligibility remaining.  He cited family concerns as the reason for switching schools. The Ducks recruited him out of high school but were late in doing so, coming in after BYU, Cal, Colorado, Iowa, and Harvard.

At Wilsonville the two-sport star played seven positions in football including running back, receiver, fullback, safety, punter, defensive end and outside linebacker. He was three-time Academic All-Conference, a 4.0 student in the classroom and a 4-star prospect as a linebacker who wowed scouts with a 112 SPARQ rating at The Opening in 2012, posting a 4.71 40and a 33.8-inch vertical jump.  In track, he won state championships in the javelin and 4×100 relay. In his senior year he had 55 tackles and 6 sacks.

In his freshman season with the Bears Ragin played in 8 games, recording 8 tackles.

In his senior highlight video he shows good versatility and aggressiveness and the ability to get off blocks. With Derrick Malone and Joe Walker both seniors next year, the former Wilsonville Warrior adds depth, size, and potential. He plays in a physical style, a blitzing, hard-working linebacker who will remind fans of Tyson Coleman.
