December 2010, the Ducks were preparing to play in their first national championship game, and Marcus Mariota was finishing up at St. Louis High School in Hawaii.
Two days before Christmas, in his senior year of a completed season, he’s working out with legendary quarterback coach Vinnie Passas, the high school position coach who developed Marcus and five other Division One quarterbacks, including Jeremiah Masoli, Jason Gesser of Washington State and University of Hawaii star Tommy Chang.

Paul Honda of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser was on hand to videotape an interview with Mariota and his coach. Interesting to hear about the evolution of a future NFL star, who didn’t start in high school until his senior year. Mariota won an Oregon offer with a solid performance at the Ducks’ summer camp, and that fall, he led St. Louis to an 11-1 record and the State Championship.
