Ducks in the NFL: Kelly falls, Maehl scores, Alonso stars, Ward lays lumber

Oregon great Jeff Maehl had his first two catches and first touchdown as a pro in the Birds’ loss. Maehl kept the ball after the play.

Kiko Alonso continues to stand out as a rookie middle linebacker for the Buffalo. The Bills caged the Ravens 23-20 in Ralph Wilson Stadium behind a great effort by the defense, holding Ray Rice and the ground game to a net 24 yards. Alonso had five tackles, two interceptions and two pass breakups. He currently leads the NFL with four picks, making a bid to surpass Jairus Byrd’s Bills rookie record of nine. After a holdout and lingering foot injuries, Byrd hasn’t played yet this season, creating some tension between him and team management, according to a report by Jason Caforna of

LaMichael James was held to three carries for zero yards in the 49’ers 35-11 win over St. Louis on Thursday night. LeGarrette Blount continues to look more viable as a pro back: he had 9 carries for 64 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown run for the Patriots, who ran their record to 4-0 by putting the hood on the Falcons, 30-23.

Walter Thurmond, Max Unger and the Seattle Seahawks are also 4-0 after dropping on Houston 23-20. Thurmond had a pair of tackles.

Former Duck safety T.J. Ward continues to be a hit man for the Cleveland. He had 5 tackles in a hard-fought divisional matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals, won by the Browns, 17-6.
